How do you store your games?

a shelf of party games at Free Parking

Here in the Free Parking Board Game Library, we are clearly fans of the vertical storage solution—that is, all games stored on a side, organized like books, rather than stacked flat on their bottoms. Or, I guess, just piled willy-nilly?

The problem, of course, is that some games don’t do well on their sides. Their components shift and fall out of their liners enough that the box pops open or it’s just an irritation to reorganize every time you want to play. We have entirely removed the box liners of games like Camel Up and Smallworld because they spilled everywhere. Planet Unknown, a charming polyomino-laying and route-building game (in space!), has an equally charming lazy Susan organizer. Every piece fits so satisfyingly in the lazy Susan, it spins during the game as part of the mechanics, it’s charming! And yet, when stored on its side, every one of those polyominoes falls out!

Is the solution to have a small section of games that are stored flat simply for logistical reasons, separating them from all the other games in their style? To store everything flat and making it a little more difficult to retrieve a game? To store everything in bags and ignore the charm of certain storage solutions? So far, the library-style solution seems to be working well for us, with certain games needing individual attention. If this is our worst struggle at Free Parking, we’re doing pretty well!

Play Wingspan: A Bird-Lover’s Dream

Wingspan is a beautifully designed game where you build an aviary filled with stunning, real-life species. Each bird card offers unique abilities that help you collect food, lay eggs, draw even more birds, or place a bird in its habitat. It’s a relaxing yet strategic game, perfect for players who love nature. Fans adore Wingspan for its gorgeous artwork, educational value, and soothing gameplay. (And we also have this year’s hotness Wyrmspan in the collection!)
