Celebration
My poor car has been going through it. There was a transmission issue, an oil issue, an ignition issue, and it’s been up and down. She was fixed, yay! She was not fixed, sadness. She was fixed again, celebration time! Nope, not fixed—wait, fixed again, huzzah! So today, when I went to pick her up again and the passenger window suddenly didn’t work, I was sad. But then I read a board game news article that one of my favorite games Mycelia is getting an expansion this year and I was uplifted a bit.
My own woes aside, this up and down experience is universal, yeah? If it’s not one thing, it’s another, they say. And so in the midst of the up and down, in the midst of uncertainty and hard things happening, we can celebrate, should celebrate when we can. Writer Dan Savage wrote this recently: “During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon, and we danced all night. The dance kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for.”
The choir I sing with recently had a retreat, at which we got to hang out in the pool after working all day on some really difficult music—difficult topics, difficult to sing. A bunch of the folks in the pool organically made up a game and those of us sitting on the edge began cheering them on like we were at a professional game, like we knew the rules—it was delightful. Here at the bar, every game is an opportunity for delight, for a kind of dance—we need celebration as much as we need work.

Play Five Tribes
Five Tribes combines stunning Arabian Nights-inspired artwork with clever worker placement strategy. The board is filled with colorful meeples (cute little wooden figures), and your job is to maneuver them to score points, summon powerful Djinns, and outwit your opponents. Each move feels like a mini puzzle as you carefully calculate the best way to clear tiles and gain control. Gamers love Five Tribes for its blend of tactics and creativity, plus the satisfying challenge of mastering the game’s unique mechanics. It’s a must-try for anyone who loves strategy games with a twist.

Eat our new Brisket Sandwich
Y’all asked, we deliver! Succulent brisket, slow-cooked for hours, served with house-made barbecue sauce and slaw on Texas toast—my mouth is watering just typing that out!
Have one with a game of Five Tribes this weekend. Just maybe wipe your hands before playing…
